Street robbery in Newcastle

Police are appealing for witnesses following a street robbery in Newcastle.

It happened at approximately 2.30pm on Thursday, June 9, in Byker. A 53-year-old woman had been walking along a short cut from Shields Road and was at Morton Street / Renwick Street when she was approached by a black man armed with a knife who threatened her. 

He stole her purse and punched her before making off. 

The woman was shocked and distressed and taken to hospital as a precaution. 

Officers are in the area carrying out house to house enquiries

and additional police are on patrol to reassure the community.

Police are appealing for witnesses anyone who was in the area and who may have seen or heard anything suspicious is asked to contact police.
