Liquid sprayed in man's face during assault

Police are appealing for information after a man was assaulted in Gateshead.

Around 3pm on Monday, June 13, a 33-year-old man became involved in an altercation with a man and a woman outside of the Booze Cellar store in Sunderland Road.

He was punched and kicked by the man and had a unknown liquid sprayed into his eyes.

He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth hospital and later transferred to Royal Victoria Infirmary where he remains in a stable condition.

It is not yet known if the liquid has caused permanent damage to the man's eyesight.

We believe that those involved in the incident are known to each other and enquiries are ongoing.
