Police are urging residents in Benwell to lock their doors and windows after two recent burglaries in the area.

Overnight between Tuesday, June 28, and Wednesday, June 29, burglars got into a house in Clovelly Avenue through an unlocked rear door. They stole a bag from inside the house before making off.

Then between 2:30pm and 5:30pm on Wednesday afternoon burglars also got into a house in Ladykirk Road, again through an unlocked rear door, and stole an amount of cash from inside the house.

Enquiries are ongoing into the two burglaries and officers are urging residents in the west end of Newcastle to lock their windows and doors and keep burglars out.

Newcastle Inspector Alan Davison said: "Burglars are looking to break-in to homes that have unlocked doors and windows. They are targeting homes in the west end of Newcastle, both day and night, and looking for these easy opportunities to strike.

"Help us to stop them by ensuring your home is secure - overnight when you go to bed, during the day when you are out or at work and even when you are inside the home. Lock your doors and remove the opportunity.

"Please report anyone you see hanging around peoples' homes and who look suspicious - anyone trying door handles, looking into windows or lurking around the rear lanes, yards and gardens of houses. If something doesn't look right then ring us and let us know - we can come and check it out and potentially stop a burglary from happening."

Anyone with any information into the two break-ins is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 900 29/06/16.
