Police are appealing for witnesses after a spate of car fires in Newcastle.

At around midnight on Friday evening police received a report that three cars were on fire in the west end of the city.

One arson occurred at Lonnon Avenue, Fenham, and the other at Riverside View Lodge, Armstrong Road.

Emergency services attended and the fires were put out but the incident is now being treated as arson.

Extra patrols are being carried out in the area to carry out enquiries and reassure any concerned members of the public.

Sergeant Adrian Oakes said: "This happened in a busy area of Newcastle so there would have been witnesses to this incident.

"A number of vehicles were set on fire in the area and we firmly believe this was a deliberate act.

"There will be officers in the area throughout the day to carry out their investigations but they will also be there to speak to anyone who has any concerns."

Any witnesses, or anyone who has any information about the arson, should contact police on 101 quoting reference 30 02/07/16.
