Police are issuing a warning to youngsters after a water main was damaged in Newcastle.

Around 5:50pm on Wednesday, July 20, police received a report that a water main had burst in Tweed Street in Elswick.

The water began to cause localised flooding in the area, disruption to traffic and left a number of local properties without water supply.

Northumbria Water engineers attended and found that the main hadn't burst but had in fact been tampered with and purposely turned on.

Enquiries were carried out and officers believe a group of local youths were responsible.

Police are in the process of identifying those responsible and are warning that anyone found tampering with the water mains could face being arrested and getting a criminal record.

Anyone who sees any children tampering with the water mains is asked to report it to police on 101.
