This is an update in relation to the sea rescue operation in Sunderland.

The 17-year-old boy who was rescued by the RNLI and taken to the RVI hospital with serious injuries has since died.

The other three teenagers remain in a stable condition.

Our thoughts are with the boys family at this time.

This is an update in relation to the sea rescue operation in Sunderland.

The 17-year-old boy who had gone into the water was rescued by the RNLI and has been taken to the RVI hospital with serious injuries.

He is currently in a critical condition.

The other three teenagers are in a stable condition.

Emergency services are currently carrying out a search and rescue operation in Sunderland.

At 3.22pm today, Tuesday August 30, two 17-year-old males were seen in the water at the mouth of the Wear, near to the Old Pier at Sunderland Yacht Club.

It's thought they had been in a dinghy when they got out to swim in the water and got into difficulty.

One of the males has been rescued, along with two 17-year-old females who were also in the dinghy.

A search operation has been launched to rescue the missing 17-year-old.
