Police in Newcastle are appealing for a witness to come forward and contact them after a bag was stolen in the city centre.

Around 10pm on Friday, September 2, a diver was unloading luggage from a coach that had parked outside Central Station, opposite the Sainsburys local store, when a man picked up one of the bags and tried to make off with it up Pink Lane.

The offender was followed and stopped by the bus driver and a member of the public who got the bag back off him before he was detained by British Transport Police officers.

24/7 officers then arrested the 28-year-old man and a 18-year-old woman in connection with the theft. They have been bailed pending further enquiries.

Enquiries are ongoing into the theft and officers are appealing for the member of the public who helped the bus driver get the bag back to come forward as he may have information that could help with the investigation.

The man, or anyone else who witnessed the incident, is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 1296 02/09/16.
