Attempted robbery in Walkergate

Police are appealing for information after an attempted robbery in Walkergate.

At 12:44pm on Wednesday, September 7, we received a report that a man had entered the Fossway Convenience Store in Sutton Street, Walkergate, armed with a firearm and a knife.

He demanded cash but fled the store empty handed.

Officers attended and after carrying out a search of the area they located a BB gun and a knife believed to be the weapons used during the incident.

No one was injured during the incident.

While the incident was ongoing officers spoke to staff at Walkergate school, which is nearby, and as a precaution asked them to keep the children inside while the incident was being dealt with.

The children being kept inside the school was in no way connected to an unrelated incident that happened outside the school at 12:12pm.

Enquiries into the attempted robbery are ongoing and anyone who saw anything or anyone suspicious in the area around the time of the incident is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 486 07/09/16.
