Police investigating an attempted bag snatch in Newcastle are issuing CCTV images in an appeal for information.

Around 2:45pm on Tuesday, August 30, a 77-year-old woman was walking in the underpass near to Walkergate Metro Station in Benfield Road when she was approached by a man who grabbed her bag.

The woman put up a struggle and was knocked to the ground by the man, suffering a cut to her hand.

The man then fled the scene empty handed.

He is described as being white, around 22-25 years old, 6ft tall, of slim build and with short shaved hair that was longer on the top than the sides.

Officers are releasing CCTV images taken from the area at the time of the incident that show a man fleeing the scene.

Although the images are of poor quality and do not show the man's face, they do show that he was wearing distinctive clothing that someone may recognise; a blue / purple tracksuit style hooded top and lighter coloured shorts that came just over the knee, blue socks and blue trainers.

Police want to identify and speak to the man in connection with the offence. He may have information that could help with enquiries.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 593 300816.
