Police are appealing for witnesses after a collision on the A1 in Newcastle.

At around 4:15pm on Saturday, October 29, a van and a car were involved in a collision on the A1 southbound between the Airport junction and the Westerhope Junction.

The vehicles involved were a black four-door Volvo V40 and a white coloured Enterprise style van.

The Volvo sustained damage and pulled onto the hard shoulder, while the van is believed to have left the scene.

Four men, who were in the Volvo, then got out of the car and all got into a long wheel base silver Mitsubishi Shogun 4x4 that had stopped.

The Shogun then left the scene of the collision, leaving the Volvo at the side of the road.

It is believed that all three vehicles - the white van, the black Volvo and the silver Shogun - may have all been driving in convoy at the time the collision happened.

Officers want to trace those involved in the collision and anyone who saw what happened, or who has any information, is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 838 29/10/16.
