Police are investigating a number of incidents in Jesmond where fireworks were set off in cars.

Between 11:15pm Wednesday night (Nov 2) and 2:15am on Thursday morning (Nov 3)police received three reports of fires inside cars parked in the Stratford Grove Terrace, Deuchar Street and Warwick Street.

The fire brigade attended all three of the fires and extinguished them however the cars were seriously damaged.

Enquiries are ongoing into the incidents and officers are urging residents in Jesmond to lock their cars overnight.

Neighbourhood Inspector Steve Byrne said: "We think that the three incidents are linked and that the same person or group of people were involved for all three. It is completely reckless and mindless behaviour that has caused thousands of pounds worth of damage and we are treating the incidents very seriously.

"The offenders may have been looking for unlocked cars to target and so would urge all motorists to lock their cars overnight and remove all valuables. Please report anyone seen acting suspiciously near cars or trying car doors to us immediately."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 1185 03/11/16.
