Police are urging residents in Byker to lock their door after a number of burglaries in the area.

In the last couple of days there has been five homes burgled in Headlam Street and St Peters Court. The break-ins have happened during the day and in every instance the offenders have got into the homes through unlocked windows and doors.

Officers are carrying out extra patrols in the area, knocking on residents doors and passing on crime prevention advice and reassurance.

Neighbourhood Inspector for the area Paul Walters said: "We will have extra officers in the area in the coming days and we are trying to tell as many people living in Byker as possible to lock their doors and windows. Burglars are operating in the area and looking for easy ways into peoples' homes. Don't make life easy for them and protect your home. Lock all doors, all windows and look after your home and your valuables."

Anyone with any information into the burglaries is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 588 07/11/16.
