Police are appealing for witnesses after an armed robbery in Allendale.

Just after 4pm this afternoon (Thursday, December 15) two men went into the Post Office in Market Place armed with axes.

They took money from the safe before making off in a Blue Astra. They then abandoned the blue astra at Hill Catton and got into another vehicle.

Enquiries are on-going to trace the men.

No-one was injured during the robbery but those in the post office were left shaken.

Extra officers are in the area both to carry out enquiries into the incident and offer reassurance to local residents.

Anyone who was in Allendale around 4pm and saw the blue astra - either in Allendale or Hill Catton, or any witnesses to the robbery, are asked to get in contact.

Witnesses should ring Northumbria Police on 101 quoting reference 710 151216 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
