Robbery in Newcastle

Police are appealing for information after a robbery in Newcastle.

The robbery happened around 4.25pm this afternoon (Monday December 15) in Wingrove Road, near to Barclay's Bank. The offenders, both men, approached a man in the street and sprayed a noxious substance in his face before stealing a bag that contained money from him. During the incident a bag was thrown into a nearby vehicle, the offenders smashed the window of the car to retrieve the bag and made off to a back lane on the west side of Wingrove Road.

They left the scene in a BMW that was later found in Sanderson Street.

It's believed the offenders were wearing brightly coloured tops, one of them was carrying a baseball bat.

The man, aged 39, who had the substance sprayed in his face was taken to hospital for medical treatment for serious injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening.

The driver of the damaged vehicle, a woman, was not injured.

Extra officers are in the area to offer reassurance and carry out enquiries.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses and are asking anyone who was in Wingrove Road around the time of the incident and have not yet spoken to police to get in contact. Officers also want to hear from anyone who saw the BMW being abandoned in Sanderson Street.
