Man assaulted in hate crime incident

Police are appealing for witnesses following a disability hate crime in Newbiggin.

It happened at 9.37pm on Saturday, December 17, the male victim was walking along Moorcroft in Newbiggin with a female friend when he was approached by a group of male youths.

They followed the couple and shouted verbal abuse at the man concerning his disability.

His friend left to get help and one of the males threw a stone, hitting him on the head, causing him to fall and hit his head on the ground.

The victim was shocked and distressed by the incident and was taken to Cramlington Hospital for treatment to his injury.

Acting Inspector Michelle Caisley said: "We're asking for help from the public to identify those responsible for this attack. We want to hear from anyone who can assist our enquiries."

Police are appealing for witnesses, anyone who was in the area and who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, is asked to contact police.
