Police in Newcastle have returned a stolen bike to it's rightful owner.

In the early hours of Monday, December 19, officers arrested a man in the Silver Lonnen / Denton area on suspicion of theft.

The man was in possession of a woman's Specialised mountain bike that was believed stolen, as it still had its tags and cellophane wrapping on it.

A social media appeal was made to try and locate the bike's owner and on Monday afternoon we received a report of a burglary in the Gosforth area where a bike was stolen.

The bike seized was found to be the one stolen in the burglary and officers were able to return it to the owner the same day.

Newcastle superintendent David Felton said: "This is fantastic police work and we are delighted to be able to get the bike back to the owners so quickly. They were so happy to have it back and were extremely thankful to the officers for their great response and good work.

"We are committed to tackling burglary in Newcastle and a man has been charged in connection with the burglary and will be appearing in front of the courts in the new year."
