Police are urging motorists in Elswick to be on their guard after a spate of thefts from cars in the area.

Overnight between late Monday, January 2, and the early hours of Tuesday, January 3, nine vehicles were broken into by thieves in the Surrey Place, Hull Street, Durham Street and Britannia Place.

A number of the cars targeted were taxis and the police believe the thieves were looking for cash floats and electronic devices left inside the vehicles.

Enquiries are on-going into the break-ins and officers are urging all residents living in the Elswick area to remove ALL valuables from their cars overnight.

Taxi drivers are warned not to leave any money in their vehicles overnight and take all valuables with them when leaving their cars unattended, even for a short time.

Anyone who sees people checking car doors, looking inside vehicles or acting suspiciously around parked cars, especially late at night, is asked to report it to police straight away on 101.
