Police are appealing for information after a robbery in Newcastle.

Around 11:10am on Wednesday, January 4, a man knocked at the door of an address in Netherby Drive.

When the elderly occupant answered the man forced his way inside the address.

He searched the property before fleeing with the victims purse. When leaving he was confronted by neighbours who heard a disturbance coming from the address and came to help.

The victim was left with minor injuries and incredibly shaken by what happened and officers are offering her and her family support at this time.

The offender is believed to be around 6ft tall, of medium build, aged between 25 to 30 years old and was wearing dark clothing. It is thought he may have been hanging around the area in the time before the attack.

Newcastle Superintendent Nicola Musgrove said: "We are working hard and making enquiries to identify and arrest this coward. It looks as if he has targeted the victim because of their age and vulnerability and thought they were an easy target.

"I'd like to praise the neighbours for spotting that something was wrong and trying to help out, their actions could have potentially helped prevent any further injury to the homeowner and they managed to scare the man off.

"If anyone knows who this man - who thinks it's acceptable to target elderly people in their own home - is, then I'd urge them to contact us on 101 and pass on any information so we can get him arrested."

Officers will be in the area carrying out extra patrols and speaking to residents.

Anyone with any information into the burglary is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 303 04/01/17.
