Police are appealing for witnesses following a robbery in North Tyneside.

It happened at a business premises, AZ Moving and Storage Ltd, on West Chirton South Industrial Estate in North Shields on Wednesday, January 11.  A masked man forced entry into the premises from the rear at 6.17 am and threatened a 56-year-old male member of staff with a knife before tying him up in a back room and talking to him at length.  He demanded cash from a safe, and stole an undisclosed amount of cash before leaving at 8.03am.

The staff member then managed to get free and called police.  He was shaken by the incident but unhurt. 

The offender is described as approximately 5 feet 10-11" tall, average build, wearing a dark zip up jacket and possibly a balaclava and had a large knife.

DC Chris Gent said: "We are appealing for help from the public to identify the person responsible for this offence, which must have been a frightening experience for the member of staff concerned.

"We'd appeal for anyone who may have any information to contact officers.

"Police are treating this as an isolated incident and are carrying out enquiries in the area."

Police are appealing for witnesses, anyone who was in the area and who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, is asked to contact police.
