Police are urging residents in Newcastle to keep their homes secure after a number of recent burglaries.

Over the last week there have been six homes burgled in the Gosforth, Melton and Brunton Park areas. The break-ins have happened early evening between 6pm and 9pm.

In some cases people have locked their homes but forgotten to put their burglar alarm on.

Police are reminding people to take extra care in these areas and to report any suspicious behaviour or vehicles in the area.

Officers are carrying out extra patrols in these neighbourhoods and are asking residents to be vigilant and to keep an eye out for anyone seen trying door handles where they live.

Acting Inspector Chris Patton said: "We have extra officers in these areas to reassure.residents and deter criminals.

"We want to make residents aware that burglars are operating in these locations. Our advice is don't make life easy for them and protect your home. Lock all doors, all windows and if you do have a burglar alarm make sure you use it."
