Police are appealing for information after a burglary in Newcastle this morning.

Between 4:25am and 4:35am on Friday, February 10, a burglar got into a house in West Meadows, Westerhope, through an unlocked rear door.

They searched the property and stole a bag and purse before making off.

Around the same time an unlocked car, parked in the same street, was also targeted and a sat nav that was in glove compartment taken.

CCTV footage taken from a local property shows the same man is responsible for both offences and can be seen checking house and car doors in the area.

Officers also found fresh footprints in the snow that showed the route the offender took between the houses and cars.

Enquiries are ongoing into the incidents and anyone who saw anything or anyone suspicious in the area this morning is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 116 10/02/17.

Police are urging residents to lock their doors, windows and cars. Both of these offences were committed where the property / car was left unlocked.

Remove anything valuable from your car overnight and never leave items like sat nav systems in your glove compartment.
