UPDATE - FEBRUARY 10

Police have charged a man following an assault in Washington earlier this week.

Shortly after 5pm on Wednesday, February 8, police were informed a man had been attacked on Birtley Road in Rickleton near to the BAE Systems factory in the Wear Industrial Estate.

The 58 year old man was taken to hospital where he is still being treated in hospital for a serious but not life threatening injury.

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and police have today (Friday) charged a 31-year-old Fatfield man in connection with the incident.

He will appear before magistrates sitting at Newcastle Crown Court tomorrow morning (Saturday).

Officers are continuing to appeal for witnesses and are particularly keen to speak to anyone who saw a dark coloured Ford Fiesta motor vehicle in the area at that time.

Police are appealing for witnesses after an assault in Rickleton, Washington.

Shortly after 5.00 pm on Wednesday, February 8, police were informed a man had been attacked by another man in Birtley Road in Rickleton near to the BAE Systems factory in the Wear Industrial Estate.

The 58 year old man, is currently being treated in hospital for a serious but not life threatening injury.

It is believed the offender had been parked in Birtley Road before the assault happened and police are keen to speak to anyone who saw a dark coloured Ford Fiesta motor vehicle in the area at that time.

A 32 year old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is still in police custody.

Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101 and quote reference number 762 08/02/17 or alternatively Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
