Investigation launched after body found in Gateshead

UPDATE - 3pm, March 3

Police continue to investigate after a body was found in a street in Gateshead.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, March 1, police received a report expressing concern for a man in a back lane in Northbourne Street.

Officers attended and found the body of a man in a wheelie bin.

Police enquiries are ongoing to formally identify the victim and speak to his next of kin.

Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances behind his death but police are currently treating it as suspicious.

A 36-year-old man has been arrested and remains in police custody at this time.

A cordon remains in place at the scene and extra officers are on patrol in the area to carry out enquiries and speak to any concerned members of the public.

Officers attended and found the body of a man in the street.

The lane has been cordoned off while enquiries are carried out to establish how the man has died.
