Police are reminding North Tyneside residents to be vigilant following a number of house burglaries recently.

Criminals have struck at homes in North Shields and Whitley Bay and officers are issuing crime prevention advice to householders in a bid to prevent further offences.

During this recent spate of crime offenders have gained access into properties during the evenings. Now police are asking people to keep a watchful eye out for any suspicious activity, and suspicious vehicles they may notice hanging around in their neighbourhoods, especially during the evenings.

Chief Inspector Helena Barron, of Northumbria Police said: "We want to make people aware that these sorts of crimes are happening in residential areas in North Tyneside.

"We have additional police patrols taking place in areas that have been affected but we are also asking residents to take extra care.

"If you do see someone acting suspiciously where you live, for example people trying door handles, then please do call it in via 101.

"We want to nip this problem in the bud by alerting people to it.

"Our officers are also visiting properties in the area to speak to residents and personally giving them crime prevention advice."
