Man arrested following Morpeth rape

Police investigating a rape which happened last month in Morpeth have made an arrest.

The incident took place between 2.30am and 5am on Saturday, February 4. An 18-year-old woman was walking along the footpath of the A197, near Morpeth Golf Club, when a man in a car stopped and offered her a lift. She got into the vehicle and after driving a short distance the man pulled into a lay-by and raped the woman.

Following enquiries detectives have arrested a 55-year-old man, he has been interviewed and released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Detective Chief Inspector Helen Anderson said: "Officers are continuing to provide support to the victim while the investigation is ongoing.

"We are still appealing for witnesses and want to hear from anyone who may be able to assist us. We are keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the relevant area in the early hours of Saturday, February 4, to contact us straightaway."
