Police are appealing for information after a serious assault in Northumberland.

At around 1.15am in the early hours of Sunday morning police received a report that a man had been assaulted outside Morpeth Train Station.

Emergency services attended and a 36-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious head injuries. His condition is currently described as stable.

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and a 28-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the incident and released on bail.

But detectives investigating the assault are now appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to get in touch.

It is believed the assault actually took place between 12.45am and 1am on a small footpath that runs between Coopies Lane and Kingswell.

Officers believe a number of people may have been in the area at the time.

Anyone with information that may help police should contact officers on 101 quoting log 85 23/04/17 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
