Serious injury collision in Glanton on the A697

Police are appealing for witnesses to a two vehicle collision near Glanton in Northumberland involving a lorry and a car.
Police received a report at 5.22pm on Tuesday, May 9, about a collision on the A697, at Low Barton a 1/4 mile north of the Bridge of Aln crossroads. It involved a Suzuki SX4 travelling north and an articulated lorry carrying large pieces of stone travelling south on the single carriageway. The Suzuki, for reason yet to be established, had travelled onto the southbound carriageway and collided with the front of the lorry.
The Suzuki came to rest facing south in the northbound carriageway and the lorry ended up partly entering an adjacent field.
The driver of the car,the single occupant a 63-year-old woman suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary and is described as being in a critical but stable condition with life threatening injuries. The lorry driver was uninjured. The road was closed for four and half hours while the casualty was dealt with and the scene examined, with local diversions in place.
