Police are reminding residents to check their shed security following recent break-ins.

Officers in Wallsend have seen an increase in shed burglaries and are advising people to make sure their locks are adequate and to consider installing a shed alarm.

Wallsend Neighbourhood Inspector Mark Storey said: "We are working hard to prevent shed burglaries by targeting offenders and making arrests.

"While we continue to carry out planned patrols to target thieves and take action, it's also important residents play their part by taking crime prevention steps to secure their property.

"Now is the time to check your shed has adequate security, don't rely on a rusty padlock which can be easily forced open, make sure the lock is good quality that isn't easy for a burglar to break.

"Shed alarms are relatively cheap and available from most DIY stores. They are an easy way of giving a boost to your shed security and are a real deterrent to burglars. Just this week we had an incident when a burglar intent on stealing from a shed tripped a shed alarm and ran off empty handed, so we know these devices do work effectively.

"People often forget the value of items in their sheds and garages but if you're keeping items such as gardening equipment, bikes and tools inside it all adds up and becomes an attractive target for burglars. Remember, don't leave expensive items out in the garden, lock them away until you need them."

"By taking some simple precautions, you can reduce the risk of becoming a victim of opportunist thieves. Please remember if you do see or hear any suspicious activity, especially overnight when most offences occur, call the police straightaway."

"If anyone sees anyone acting suspiciously in their neighbourhood I would urge them to contact police on 101 so we can take action."
