A man arrested following a search of an address in Heaton yesterday has been released under investigation.

At around 8.30am on Thursday morning police attended an address on Heaton Park View following reports of suspicious behaviour.

Upon a search of the address a number of chemicals were found which caused concern for police.

A 42-year-old local man was arrested and a small cordon put in place to allow specialist officers to carry out a full search of the property and assess the materials in question.

Those searches have been continuing since yesterday morning and police are now confident that they pose no risk to the wider community.

As a result the man who was arrested has been released under investigation and placed in temporary accommodation by Newcastle City Council.

Chief Superintendent Neil Hutchison said: "We have carried out a full assessment and are very confident that the chemicals recovered pose no risk to the wider public.

"Local residents may have been concerned about the level of police activity but when we are dealing with unidentified materials we have to take all the precautions necessary to ensure safety of our officers and the wider public.

"During the ongoing investigation the man who was arrested yesterday will be placed in temporary accommodation by the local authority.

"There is an ongoing investigation to determine if any criminal offences have been committed."
