Boy in a serious condition after collision in Sunderland

We're appealing for witnesses after a collision on the A194 (M) in Sunderland. 

The collision happened around 5.25pm on Saturday, July 1, between Washington Highway and the A1. For reasons yet to be established a Red Suzuki Ignis collided with a tree. 

The driver and passenger - an 8 year old boy - were taken to hospital. The boys injuries are serious and potentially life threatening.  

The vehicle had travelled from the South Shields area before the collision. 

Officers are carrying out enquiries and appealing for witnesses.
