Police are appealing for witnesses after two men assaulted members of the public and police officers in Newcastle City Centre.

It happened just off the Quayside at 3.18am, the early hours of Monday, August 14. The men punched and kicked people on the Castle Stairs then made off towards St Nicholas Street.

Officers attended and a short time later two men were arrested. While making the arrests two police officers were also assaulted, including a female officer who was knocked unconscious. The officer received treatment at hospital for her injuries and was later released.

When the pair were detained in custody at Forth Banks Police station three detention officers and the custody nurse were also attacked.

Police believe several people may have seen this incident and would appeal for witnesses to come forward.

When the officers were being set upon in the Street, four Asian men came to the officer’s assistance and helped them.

Acting Chief Inspector Steve Wykes, of Northumbria Police said: “I’d like to thank the four men who came to our officer’s aid it was brave of them to do so, but they left before our officers could get their details.  I’d ask them to come forward and speak to us so we can thank them for their actions. The offender’s behaviour is wholly unacceptable and will not be tolerated by Northumbria police.  While I am pleased to report that the officers are not seriously injured this was an awful incident and the officers are receiving support.

“I’d also appeal for anyone who was in the area of St Nicholas Street and Castle Stairs who may have witnessed the incident to contact police.”

Two men aged 25 and 36 years were arrested on suspicion of assaulting an officer in the execution of their duty and are detained in custody helping police with their enquiries.
