Appeal after cyclist assaulted and bicycle stolen

Police are appealing for information after a cyclist was assaulted by thieves who then stole his bike.

The incident happened at around 5.45pm on Sunday (17/9) on a grassed area enclosed by Easedale Gardens and Old Durham Road in the Wrekenton area of Gateshead.

A 25-year-old man was pushing his bicycle in the company of his 17-year-old friend when he was approached by two men from behind.

They then seriously assaulted them both and made off with the victim's bicycle .

Both the men then attended hospital with the 25-year-old man suffering a broken jaw and having to have metal plates inserted in his face.

The 17-year-old was also treated for bruised ribs before being discharged from hospital at which point they reported the incident to police.

Enquiries to trace those responsible are ongoing but police are now appealing for help from the public.

The offenders are described by the victims as being white and of stocky builds  One of the males had dark hair and was wearing a grey tracksuit. 

The stolen bicycle is described as a Carrera mountain bike, blue and white in colour.
