A man has been summonsed to court following a burglary at a school in Gateshead.

The burglary took place just before midnight on Monday, October 9, when entry was forced at Heworth Grange Comprehensive School.

Windows at the school were smashed, the internal building was vandalised with marker pens and the power generator was damaged.

The damage to the electricity generators left the school without power, heating or lighting and meant the school had to be closed for three days.

It was found that a laptop was also stolen during the incident and an investigation was launched by Gateshead East Neighbourhood Policing Team.

Earlier this week, officers on the team arrested a 25-year-old man in relation to the burglary. The stolen laptop was also recovered by officers and returned to the school.

The man was released under investigation but he has now been summonsed to court for burglary to appear at a later date.

If you have any information about the burglary you can still contact police on 101 quoting log 146 10/10/17 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
