Fatal collision in Gateshead

Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision in Low Fell, Gateshead.

It happened at approximately 11.15am on Tuesday, November 14, on Durham Road, 50 metres south of its junction with Belle Vue Bank.

An 85-year-old woman pedestrian was fatally injured as she crossed the road from the direction of the Co-op, after she was struck by a Mercedes goods vehicle, which was travelling north on Durham Road.

Following the collision the vehicle stopped a short distance away.

The road was closed for approximately three hours while the casualty was dealt with and the scene examined. Enquiries are continuing and police are appealing for witnesses.

A 51-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released under investigation.

Sergeant Dave Clement, from Northumbria's Motor Patrols, said: "We are appealing for any witnesses to this fatal collision to come forward and speak with officers.

"We would also like to thank all the members of the public who gave assistance at the location following the collision until the emergency services attended.

"Specialist officers are supporting the family of the pedestrian at this time."
