Two men have been arrested after a student was robbed in Newcastle last week.

At around 7.35pm last Thursday a 22-year-old female university student was approached by two men next to The Foundry flats on New Bridge Street in Shieldfield.

They then grabbed her and took a Michael Kors handbag and a Michael Kors wallet from her before fleeing the area.  She was very shaken up by the incident but wasn’t injured in any way.

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and officers have now made two arrests as part of their investigation into the robbery.

Neighbourhood Inspector Steve Byrne said: "We took swift action after receiving this report and two suspects have been arrested.

"It was a frightening incident for the young woman involved but hopefully our quick response is reassuring for other students at The Foundry.

"A full investigation is still ongoing and we are making enquiries to try and recover all of the property taken during the offence.

"Officers are still proactively patrolling the area so if any students have concerns we would encourage them to stop and speak to us."

One of the the men has been released under investigation while the second man has been recalled under the terms of his prison licence for outstanding offences.

Anyone with information about the incident can contact police on 101 quoting reference 931 11/01/18 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
