Yesterday Thursday, January 25, Newcastle Magistrates issued a closure order at licensed premises, Wellfield Stores, Felling.

This followed Northumbria Police issuing a closure notice on Thursday January 11, after concerns about selling alcohol to underage customers.

An operation was launched by police after they received reports of people under the legal age purchasing alcohol.

Following this, test purchases were carried out by Trading Standards, which confirmed the reports.

Northumbria Police and Gateshead Council have worked together closely on this issue in order to stamp out illegal sales.

Superintendent Nicola Musgrove, said the closure order should send a stern warning message to other premises in the area not to abuse their licensing.

She said: "The closure yesterday shows how hard Northumbria Police and local authorities are working in order to prevent illegal sales to those underage.

"We enjoy a really positive relationship with our licencing partners and the decision to issue closure notices has not been taken lightly.

"However, the most important issue is that we are protecting children from having access to age restricted product, in order to keep them safe.

"If we suspect individuals or premises to be supplying alcohol to those underage, then we will not hesitate to take action."
