A 26-year-old male has been arrested by officers following a domestic burglary in Morpeth on January 26.

The arrest was made as part of Operation Overwatch, an initiative which has now been running for a month, focusing on both proactive crime prevention and additional patrols in key areas.

Acting Inspector Neil Hall condemned the incident, and wants to reassure local residents that strong action will be taken.

He said: “We are now 4 weeks into Operation Overwatch which has yielded some excellent results across the Blyth area.

“Over the last 28 day period we have seen a 56% reduction in burglary dwelling offences compared to the previous 28 day period. There has been a great reduction in the Cowpen Quay area where we experienced 10 residential burglaries in December 2017, with only 1 offence recorded in January.

“We have been working tirelessly with partners to address issues raised by the public and we remain committed to reducing burglary offences in Blyth.

“We will continue to do everything we can to try to stop such crimes happening and take action against criminals operating in the area; they should know there will be no place to hide. High visibility and reassurance patrols will continue, and tactics deployed during the operation will be targeted in key areas.”
