A man has been jailed after he raped a woman in Sunderland.
Last November, Dean Smettem, 26 of Malborough Street in Hartlepool, was found guilty of rape at Newcastle Crown Court.
Today he has been sentenced to 12 years for the offence that happened in a house in Sunderland in June 2016.
Detective Inspector Ash Hopper from Northumbria Police’s Rape Investigation Team said: “Smettem is clearly a dangerous individual and I’m pleased he will now serve a considerable amount of time behind bars for his actions.
“I’d like to thank the victim for her bravery during our investigation. Officers in our rape investigation teams are specially trained to deal with the incredible sensitivities around incidents of this nature and they are fully committed to making sure victims have the right support they need and that perpetrators are dealt with.”
