Police are appealing for witnesses after an armed robber assaulted staff at a Newcastle shop.

At around 7pm last Monday (March 26) a man entered the Jubilee Convenience Store on Sceptre Place in Elswick armed with what is believed to be an imitation firearm.

He threatened staff but when they refused to hand over money he left the store empty handed.

A short time later he re-entered the store and assaulted two members of staff in the shop. He struck one of the staff with the plastic firearm which then broke into pieces at the scene.

They received non-life threatening injuries during the incident but required hospital treatment and were very shaken up.

The offender then fled the area across Sceptre Street and down Britannia Place

He is described white, aged in his late 20s, of average build and between 5ft8in and 6ft tall. He was wearing a bright blue puffa jacket, dark trousers and trainers.

Detective Inspector Steve Byrne, of Central CID, said: “We are carrying out a number of enquiries to trace the person responsible and bring him into custody.

“There is a lot of CCTV in the area and we are going through all the footage to piece together his exact movements before and after the incident.

“We know there is even more private CCTV in the area and would ask people to view it and hand it over to police if they believe it could be helpful.

“That information, together with information from the public, could be vital in identifying the person responsible for this attempted robbery and subsequent assaults.

“If you were in the area and saw a man matching this description then please give us a call.”
