Dame Vera Baird QC has announced that the first Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner’s Lecture will be delivered by the Rt Hon John Bercow MP, who is Speaker of the House of Commons.
The event on Thursday, November 29, will be Chaired by Northumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Dame Vera Baird, and will be followed by questions from the audience.

Dame Vera said:

“I am honoured that the Speaker of the House of Commons has agreed to deliver the first lecture. I established the event to bring a national perspective to Northumbria on the issues of the day. I’ve known the Speaker of the House of Commons for many years. He will be engaging, thought-provoking and it’s great news for our region that he has once again agreed to visit.”

Dame Vera added:

“Westminster is the ‘Mother of Parliaments’ and to hear first-hand from the Speaker about day to day life and Parliament’s quirkiness will be of great interest. Being Speaker of the House of Commons is a unique job, created in the 1300s – so there’s lots to talk about.”

The Rt Hon John Bercow said:

“I was delighted to accept Dame Vera Baird’s invitation to deliver the lecture. The North East of England is a great place – full of passionate people who are keen to make a difference. As Speaker of the House of Commons, I want Parliament to engage with voters in a positive way. How better to achieve this than visiting Newcastle to meet local people. It’ll be good to catch up with Dame Vera again - and I’m looking forward to the warm North-East friendliness that I receive when I am in the region.”

The lecture has only been possible with sponsorship from global legal practice Eversheds Sutherland and with the support of Trenchers Restaurant of Spanish City, Whitley Bay.

Shirley Hall, Newcastle Senior Office Partner Eversheds Sutherland, said:

“The Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioners Lecture is an excellent idea and Eversheds Sutherland is delighted that our sponsorship helps make it possible.  John Bercow is a great choice as the first speaker and we have no doubt it will be a fantastic evening”

The lecture will be hosted at the Great Hall, Discovery Museum, Newcastle upon Tyne, starting at 6.30pm. Tickets are free, but demand will be high so early application is therefore advisable. Tickets are limited to two per household
